“What I Mean” marks a pivotal early moment in Maria Mihailik’s forthcoming project, helping to establish both its sonic identity and narrative direction. As one of the first songs written for the record, the track introduces recurring themes of power, deception and relationships, approached through a tongue-in-cheek, subtly melodramatic lens. This sensibility runs throughout the wider body of work, giving the album a distinct emotional and storytelling coherence.

The single was developed in close collaboration with producer Cameron Niven, with a shared focus on atmosphere, texture and detail. Drawing inspiration from a range of contemporary and experimental influences, the production unfolds within a delicate, immersive sound world. Layered keyboard passages, understated clarinet flourishes and the warmth of tape treatments move fluidly through the arrangement, shaping a sound that is both restrained and emotionally resonant.
