Ricky Damiani, the acclaimed singer/songwriter known as Mock Deer, releases Pilgrims on July 11th 2024. The dark, melodic and pensive collection finds Mock Deer crafting introspective, somber art-rock and psych-folk sounds alongside a full band.
Pilgrims originated from a crowdfunding campaign where fans paid to have songs written for them, but the tracks evolved into deeply personal artistic statements,” Damiani explains. “I soon realised that the finished article has to be something I am really proud of, which meant giving the songs more time to fully develop. Separating myself completely from the songwriting also proved difficult, as these songs inevitably contain elements of my own experiences and perspectives.”
Exploring profound themes of mortality, ontology, love, friendship, mental illness and religion, Pilgrims was inspired by the people around Mock Deer. The EP represents a cathartic form of artistic expression grounded in his personal experiences.
The haunting, atmospheric Pilgrims EP is brought to life by Mock Deer’s evocative lyricism and song craft.
Mock Deer has become an integral part of London’s independent music scene via his prolific work with fellow artists from the city and beyond. He has toured extensively in Europe and shared the stage with artists such as Joan Shelley, Willy Mason, Brent Cobb, Simon Joyner and The Burning Hell. He has received much praise over the years and has been endorsed by the likes of Rough Trade and renowned British Jazz Musician and Composer Shabaka Hutchings, amongst others.
With the Pilgrims EP, he cements his status as one of art-rock/psych-folk’s most compelling and introspective songwriters today.
