The new single from Mock Deer, a forgotten demo rediscovered in the artist’s archives, nearly never made it into the world.

As artists leant into virtual concerts amidst the pandemic, Mock Deer (Ricky Damiani) made an exciting discovery. While doing some digital spring cleaning, he stumbled upon old demos and projects that he had recorded over the years.

Among these forgotten treasures was a demo that had eluded his memory bank. Recollections of a short but intense period of creativity came flooding back and he was now listening to a song with a fresh and very different perspective. With the passing of time and gained experience, he revisited a song that merited public attention.

The vocals on the demo have a distinctive rawness to them and the decision was made to keep the original take for the final recording. The final piece reflects the depth of the lyrics. It conveys the artist’s personal struggles alongside broader existential themes. In an era where rediscovered music is gaining popularity, particularly in the indie music scene, the artist’s journey of rediscovery and the unique qualities of the music contribute to its appeal.

When asked if there were any more hidden gems in the Mock Deer archives, the artist admitted “I have another hard drive that I’ve been holding off searching through for that very purpose. Perhaps there’ll be something shiny there for the next record.”
