Fearlessly unpredictable pianist and composer Matthew Bourne joins London noise duo Bone Folder for an evening exploring texture, drone and improvisation.

Known for his exploratory and experimental sensibilities, Matthew Bourne moves between acoustic piano and analogue synthesisers, blending delicacy and virtuosity. Bone Folder — whose “majestic” (Everything is Noise) debut dropped in May 2026 — are a guitar and bass duo dealing in subtly shifting masses of textured sound. Both share a fascination with improvisation as a transportive practice that can reshape time for performer and listener alike.

This debut collaboration will bring their complementary approaches together through individual and joint performances.

Matthew Bourne is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, and possesses an inventive and unique artistic approach for bringing infirm pianos back to life in Harpsichords (2024), collaborating with classical musicians of the London Sinfonietta in Written/Unwritten, the acclaimed solo piano albums, Montauk Variations, Isotach, and reinterpretations of Amon Tobin’s work for Ninja Tune.

Other projects include Radioland; a live reworking of Kraftwerk’s Radio-Activity album (in collaboration with Franck Vigroux & Antoine Schmitt), solo synthesiser album moogmemory; Nightports w/Matthew Bourne; and the double-album Aeolian, with the late Keith Tippett. Bourne’s work has appeared on compilations by Bonobo and Hot Chip, and featured in Paolo Sorentino’s 2018 film LORO.

Bourne continues to develop his solo piano work (Désinances / Irrealis / This Is Not For You.), and is currently working on a number of new projects – including the recently-released Hand to Mouth, for Fatcat Records with longtime collaborator Keeley Forsyth.

Bone Folder’s J Kamboh (bass) and Mat Martin (guitar) first met playing on London’s alternative music scene. Over the course of a year, as their paths would frequently cross and re-cross, the pair began exchanging records and ideas, noticing a unique chemistry whenever they played together. It soon became apparent that they possessed a shared desire to forge an improvised musical language of their own.

Embarking upon a disciplined working regime of days-long woodshedding sessions in isolated locations, they developed a practice built around drone, repetition and an intuitive response to the vast empty skies and rough-hewn beauty of the surrounding landscapes. Here the disparate strands of their obsessions with the NYC abstract expressionists and primitive, long-forgotten folk rituals, gradually coalesced and coagulated until — like Rothko’s Chapel reconstructed from monoliths — Bone Folder heaved itself into being.

In Bone Folder, Kamboh’s organic, untethered bass playing and Martin’s synaesthetic musical instincts converge in improvised explorations of time and space. Explorations rooted in tension and harmonic stasis; instilling a mediative state that fizzes at the edge of melodic fragility; burrowing into the fissures of Gavin Bryars’ iceberg…

Bone Folder’s self-titled debut album, recorded with Sean Woodlock (Moin, Part Chimp) and mastered by Noel Summerville (Godflesh, Merzbow), is a snapshot of the duo’s improvisational process. In a series of single takes, with no overdubs, Kamboh and Martin have created a record of vast and uncanny intimacy that seems to exist somewhere outside time.
