Back at The Gallery Cafe tomorrow night with – Troubadour Rose/LA Salami/Until the bird …!

TROUBADOUR ROSE

Troubadour Rose formed on a cold November morning in 2009 at a dusty violin workshop in Stoke Newington. The fortuitous meeting comprisesof Gary Bridgewood, violinist and workshop proprietor, multi-instrumentalist Lizzy O’Connor who was working as a part time cleaner, and wandering, out of work songstress Bryony Afferson, searching for a few band mates.

The Troubadour Rose sound quickly became a fusion of their individual histories:

Barnsley-born Bryony came to London in 2001. She began writing years earlier, growing up on Fleetwood Mac, Nanci Griffith and PJ Harvey records. These influences are clear in her stunning vocal delivery and exquisite song-writing, bringing to mind a young Stevie Nicks.

Lizzy O’Connor hailed from the North East steeped in Traditional Irish music having travelled the world with raucous ceilidh bands.
She wields her unique style – delicate harmonies, banjo and mandolin hooks – to stunning effect in Troubadour Rose.

Gary, a talented violinist who has toured globally with subversive pop/jazz band The Real Tuesday Weld and Klezmer outfit Beskydy, brings a kaleidoscopic and often unhinged element to the group, developing its wild and unpredictable edge.

The result? A strange and thrilling mix; Smokey mountain harmonies, Irish Sessions and bold sumptuous melodies leaving you all set for the unraveling and longing for more.

L A SALAMI

L.A. Salami was born, fostered, returned – confused as a child being thrown between the two families and the two worlds (one in London, one in Broadstairs, Kent), but it is this, he’ll tell you, that made him. He escaped young, poetry and film obsessed, and ever dreaming of making films himself one day. This was his main pursuit, Spielberg was his god, Jean-Luc Godard his hero, neither family introduced him particularly to music. Bob Dylan and Blind Willie Mctell came to him when he was young – a pre-teen – by accident, on a radio, between the Leonard Cohen and the Hip Hop he loved. Massive ideas, thoughts, expressions riding on a wave of simplicity. It changed the way he heard music, and his idea of it. But this was all non-consequential, no one could afford to buy him an instrument, and he could not afford to buy one himself. There was a two week period during a summer in his youth where he got his hands on a mini guitar he didn’t own. He remembers melting completely into a state of belonging – not knowing chords, or anything about music, but making up songs anyway, singing, then that guitar not being around anymore. He grew, wrote, wandered, bought a harmonica in the key of C, practiced with that, was consumed by thoughts of human frailty, human meaning, violence, war, reason; he moved to Colchester, Essex for a while and slept rough in cinemas before his friend gave him an old busted classical guitar at the age of 21 to learn how to play with. 3 months later he wrote his first song. A month after that he wrote the first song he kept. A week after that he found it difficult to stop writing songs. Two years after he was given the guitar he returned to London and began performing around town. Other things happened before, during and after all of this, but he believes this all to be unimportant in context.

UNTIL THE BIRD OF THE SOUL TAKES FLIGHT FROM THE CAGE OF THE BODY TO CONSORT WITH THE NIGHTINGALES OF THE EVERLASTING GARDEN ..

UTBOTSTFFTCOTBTCWTNOTEG is a three-piece post-apocalyptic acoustic folk-pop band based in London. Their songs are mini-epic celebrations of life and love made in defiance of war and the forces of late capitalism. They craft something you haven’t ever quite heard before, while remaining rooted in the musical history of these islands and further afield.

Rumour Cubes go acoustic at The Gallery Cafe this Friday!

Rumour Cubes

.. Are a London-based six-piece creating atmospheric instrumental music. Working with poets and film makers and writing custom music software to sync videos to their live performances, the band construct a multimedia experience where dense ambient textures and intricate rhythms underlie beautiful melodies highlighted by violin and viola.

The bands EP We Have Sound Houses Also has been described as phenomenal (Echoes and Dust), music to make and break hearts (The 405), enough to put the band in the running for the title of best new artist (The Silent Ballet) and the band have received airplay from BBC 6 Musics Tom Robinson.

The band have recently recorded their debut album The Narrow State at Cafe Music Studios (Orbital, Brian Eno, King Creosote) in east London which will be released on 27th February 2012.

Rumour Cubes are Joe Bartlett (bass), Terry Murphy (viola), Hannah Morgan (violin), Omar Rahwangi (drums), Adam Stark (guitar, electronics) and Simon Stark (guitar, electronics).

Soulmates Never Die

.. is a young lad called Josh from Leeds! Hes been getting noticed recently for his very catchy songs that have a very differnet sound, that some describe as Grunge/Folk! His songs are sometimes reminisent of Bright Eyes with a flair for wit and a slightly poppier edge!

Mike Nisbet

‘Vagrant’ is the debut album from Oban-born musician Mike Nisbet. A Diving Bell Production, it was recorded in Glasgow in October 2010 by Marcus Mackay and will be released on (9/06/2011).

The albums ten tracks were written in the winter of 2009. After spending more than a year living between London and Glasgow so the songs are primarily to do with being on the road and basically having no home to return to. The albums completion was made possible by Creative Scotland, which provided the funding for the studio time. Nisbets long term ambition to create a solo record that, at its heart, is one man playing directly to the listener, has been beautifully realised.

GGGGRRRRREAT line up tonight at The Gallery Cafe (See Below)

Image

Due to family reasons the original headliners for this evening (All We Are) had to pull out. We have however been blessed with some stupendous replacements ..

Folklore Featuring … Kari K.Jahnsen/Douglas Dare + Guests
All We Are have been replaced with a split set from the equally wonderful Kari K. Jahnsen & Douglas Dare!! The Night also has top support from Maria Byrne & The Broken String and Lucy Kitt.

LIKE SPINNING

- Beautiful, lingering melodies coupled with melancholy lyrics reminiscent of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes with a definite eery undertone of eccentric ethereality
- ITNO Music

- Anglo-Norwegian band Like Spinning are purveyors of harmony rich indie-folk that will nestle nicely into you collection somewhere between First Aid Kit and Fleet Foxes (sound-wise, not alphabetically obviously). ‘My Window’ a dreamy track from recent double A-side single ‘Forces/My Window’, is a luscious, drifting and soothing treat for the ears and offers a few minutes of pure escapism
- The Sound Of Confusion

- Like Spinning are miners of melancholy. They’ve lured me into a world that is forever Autumn; a sunny sunny cold cold day full of fond memories and empty spaces. As they reach out I can’t help but give myself over, pulling a little closer as I don’t want to miss a thing. Hanging on every last word of such beautiful songs, songs with real weight to them as they offer intimacy and honesty in equal measures. Fans of many of today’s harmonious hot-shots (Fleet Foxes/Bon Iver et al) could find a new friend here, and perhaps one more worthy of your affection, a friend that you can actually relate to, imagine sitting with, sharing a joke, a drink, or a little encouragement to keep mining for that heart of gold
- Simple Folk Radio

- ‘Forces / My Window’ are both genuinely gorgeous, Kari has a truly beautiful voice, her ethereal vocals compliment the wistful melodies of her music perfectly, interweaving beautiful guitar arrangements with subdued percussion and dreamy harmonies to create a wonderful hazy, languid atmosphere that will ease your worries away
- Just Music That I Like

- Their sound is woozy dreamy alternative pop music with lots of female harmonies and floating guitar lines. Think Warpaint, Lanterns on the Lake and CocoRosie. The songs are exquisitely made and produced, I think they have the potential to make a really beautiful album
- Flying with Anna

- ‘Forces’ is an indie pop tune with a beautifully subtle composition. Jahnsen proves to be a skilled songwriter who conveys emotion well
- The DADADA

DOUGLAS DARE

Twenty-one year old Douglas Dare from West Dorset has emerged with a haunting sound of acoustic, piano based indie. Inspired by the solo projects of Jack Steadman (Bombay Bicycle Club), Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear) and Thom Yorke, Douglas combines intimate arrangements with a voice and lyric of a true storyteller.

Apparently, Maria Byrne used to work as a welder, tackling hairline cracks in Rolls Royce jet engines. Having never taken a naked flame anywhere near a jet engine, I can only imagine it to be an intensive, noisy way to pass the time. Which would make it pretty much the opposite of Byrnes debut album,Little Basement. For this record, youre going to need a different set of adjectives. How about sweet, simple and infectious. Those should tell you most of what you need to know.

Little Basement is full of sing-along melodies, at once delicate and full of life. Almost all of Byrnes momentum so far has been built through radio play, and its easy to see why given the charming tunes that make up this record, not least the toe-tappers Home and All You Need.

The celtic charm of her Irish upbringing shine through with the gentle fiddle adding a little fizzle, but the instrumentation is largely kept to a minimum in order to showcase Byrnes heart-warming vocals. The pace changes on the delightful Winter, which has an effect akin to a welcoming log fire on a cold day.

It helps to cap an accomplished debut that suggests Byrne has talent enough to keep her away from welding torches for as long as she chooses.

With an eclectic mix of folk rock and country blues, Lucy Kitt is fast developing a growing fan-base throughout the UK and beyond with her self-penned acoustic songs.
As a guitarist and performer in all girl Grunge band ‘Ostara’, the band quickly became established as well known musicians in their hometown of Romford & Upminster in Essex. It was moving to Kent for University after the split of Ostara that Lucy’s love for acoustic and folk took hold. Lucy naturally began taking inspiration from the likes of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Sandy Denny and music from her parents influential collection of 70s sounds. Beginning as a solo performer, Lucy soon became a feature on the Canterbury music scene and has been a respected local talent ever since. Recognition for her songwriting saw her reach the semi finals of the BBC Radio 2 young folk award in 2007. Beyond the UK, Lucy has fans across Europe and USA; having performed in Sweden and Switzerland, and organised her own mini-tour of North California, Lucy continues to spread her music far and wide. With radio air play in Australia as well as back home, and famous fans from the likes of anti-folk hero Billy Bragg, exposure of Lucys music is fast catching up her exceptional talent.

Folklore returns for its 2nd Installment at 93 Feet East after a great first outing on valentines day, which saw some amazing live music and the odd celebrity audience member!!

The 13th of march is looking just as promising however with the venue welcoming so more excellent talent to its stage!

They are as follows …

OH RUIN

Eoin O’Ruainigh’s story began in Dublin playing guitar for a string of bands before travelling to London, where he began writing solo songs. Crooning tales of childhood mischief and the first sweet stings of love, combining stomping blues with campfire quiet troubadour tunes. A little loose, a little rough around the edges, with melodies borrowed from old Irish folk songs, and stories set to intricate finger picked paeans. While honing his song writing craft, Eoin’s been learning the art of the luthier, making the guitar he now plays. With some high profile support slots under his belt (Notably Dan Mangan and Morrisey!!) and appearances at the fast becoming legendary festival End Of The Road he really is a must see live!

Press

There’s something of the troubadour about Oh Ruin; one cannot help but imagine him sitting in a green or strolling around a village strumming his tales that invoke a time past. Oh Ruin (Eoin O’Ruainigh) inconspicuously sits on the stool at the centre of the stage and begins picking and strumming at his guitar after the briefest of introductions. As his fingers quickly change position there is an audible hush that begins to fall over the already quiet audience as they take in the complex melodies.
Oh Ruin’s passionate distinguished vocals speak of desire, lost loves and stories told by the moon. The songs are filled with lyrics that need to be savoured. ‘The Pillow where your head does lay’ begins, “Climb up on the rooftops to the top of your voice, and tell it to the sky, you love has arrived” continuing with waves of lyrics showcasing the writing ability of this talented artist. This is only occasionally interrupted by his need to keep tuning his guitar, on one occasion saying, “Who makes these?” something all the more entertaining as Eoin is a trained luthier and made the guitar he presently plays.
‘The Pillow Where Your Head Does Lay’ is followed by a rendition of ‘Now is the Needed Time’, a traditional gospel song delivered with such consistently with his style and emotion that it could easily be assumed to be one of his own. The set ends with the initially calm, ‘Just like Kat’s Guitar’, which quickly increases in energy but unfortunately signals the end of the show. Fortunately, the end is preceded by another guitar instrumental that is just as impressive as the first.
And then, as casually as he stepped on stage, Oh Ruin bids the audience farewell and exits the stage but not without leaving a lasting impression.

DUOTONE

Duotone is the name under which Barney Morse-Brown (cellist for The Imagined Village and Chris Wood’s Handmade Life) and James Garrett (London based singer-song writer and percussionist) write and perform their own contemporary acoustic songs. They loop guitars, cellos, percussion and voices to create ethereal soundscapes for their poignant lyrics to weave in and out.

Following hugely successful appearances at End of the Road Festival and London’s South Bank Centre in 2010 Duotone have regularly been mesmerising audiences around the country with their shows that breathlessly move from riotous energy all the way down to the most delicate moments of heartfelt intimacy.

With momentum building, the duo were asked to support The Imagined Village on their Spring 2011 UK tour, playing some of the UK’s top venues and in the process winning a new audience selling large quantities of both their debut album ‘Work Harder & One Day You’ll Find Her’ and their DVD ‘Live at the Electric Palace’.

Coming from a musical family of seven children, Barney’s passion for performance was established early on, studying the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and was awarded a scholarship to study baroque cello at the Royal Collage of Music. The cello has always played a pivotal role in Morse-Brown life, starting at the age of six, progressing through college, university to building a career as a professional musician working the likes of Chris Wood, The Imagined Village and Eliza Carthy. Morse-Brown has honed his skills within this world to help him create a sound that not only challenges convention but to also shows the versatility of the instrument by making it the lead instrument in this band.

Raised in Dorset James began learning classical guitar at an early age before moving into a more rock orientated world in the thriving music scene around Bridport. Garrett worked on moving beyond the normal confines of guitar playing, always looking to achieve new sounds. This approach was carried into the world of percussion when Garrett took up the Cajon (a hand crafted wooden box drum originating in Latin America). With his unique percussion set up Garrett provides the heartbeat of Duotone’s sound.

Leeds (UK) based singer songwriter & Producer Charlie Bath is an exciting new songstress that brings her own inimitable brand of acoustic romance to the singer songwriter genre.
