EMANUEL AND THE FEAR / DENIS JONES / DOUGLAS DARE at The Wilmington Arms on Monday the 22nd Oct ..

Folklore are proud to present (In association with The Local) Emanuel and the Fear, with excellent support from Denis Jones and Douglas Dare.

http://www.wegottickets.com/event/181173

Emanuel and the Fear is a band. They live in Brooklyn NYC. There used to be 11 of them, but now there are only 6.

EMANUEL AND THE FEAR have been advised to explain what they sound like. They can’t, however, seem to agree on a genre classification since the only thing all 6 of them can agree on is that Marvin Gaye’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the 1983 N

BA all-star game is a brilliant piece of music. If you call them a rock band, nobody will be offended.

Emanuel and the Fear have already released 3 records that are available for purchase everywhere you can buy music online. They also have physical CDs available for people that are still into that sort of thing.

Emanuel and the Fear’s fourth release and likewise second full length, “The Janus Mirror”, will be released by Haldern Pop Records in Europe September 14th and the UK September 21st.

Emanuel and the Fear will release “The Janus Mirror” in the US when they get their shit together.

Emanuel and the Fear think you’re going to like “The Janus Mirror”. Based on what scholars have decoded from the Mayan calendar regarding our current 2012th year, with the world being on the cusp of the great pivot of the current age, “The Janus Mirror” is a record about change. It deals with the the over-filled human experience in todays silicone world. “The Janus Mirror” is our eyes, it is the point between the world outside and the world in our minds. It is about a two-headed monster. It’s also about 44 minutes long.

Emanuel and the Fear have bemused worldwide press such as The Guardian, Paste, Rolling Stone (Germany), Paper Magazine, NME, Village Voice, and Vice (Germany).

Emanuel and the Fear will be touring Europe and the UK in support of “The Janus Mirror”. They will tour the US when they get their shit together.

DENIS JONES -With his second album, “Red + Yellow =” (released October 2010 on Manchester independent label Humble Soul), Denis has at last managed to capture the intensity of his live performances in a studio environment, working with various engineers and finalising the recording and mixing at Airtight Studios with Tom Knott (The Earlies).

The album was preceded by a limited edition 10″ EP featuring remixes by Paddy Steer and Graham Massey.

Denis Jones has, over the last three years, developed a show-stopping live performance based around the core of his exceptional and unique guitar-playing style and rich, soulful voice. Utilising a loop station and all manner of samplers and effects, Denis creates vast, complex orchestrations of beat-box rhythms, multi-layered vocals and other-wordly sounds which veer from subtle heart-wrenching folk and blues to heavy bass-driven electronica.

“scuzzy Mancunian blues at its richest and, most intriguing.” The Guardian

AY DUCANE

‘Dylan walked to the desert to collect his shoes. While tripping over Tom Waits in the sand growling at a $50 bill held to the sun. Around a corner in the drunken features of a writer confined to a motel in the desert The Band looms. John Martyn once wandered down that hall singing of the Howlin’ Wolves while the Doors would not stop opening. They too are tied to a pride that courses through their bitter veins stained blue by rage. They’re marching now. Monsters have risen and fallen on both sides. Peace has become fear. Sex, solves everything. For the first time, there’s not much Lennon could have done now…’

Ay Ducane, formed by Francis Newington (somerset) and Galih Richardson (indonesia/london). Joined recently by the Richen’s brothers, Adam, and Ollie (somerset) and Fender bassist Edward Maltby (unknown).

Ay Ducane are in the driving seat as a modern Americana band based in London; nudists in a world of cover-up artists. Their live sound is enigmatic one that must be heard. They won’t be naked, but their fully analogue EP recorded onto two-inch tape is scheduled to be released late 2012.

“Forest Fire is a well defined and masterfully arranged album with instant enjoyability and an enduring sound. Mat Gibson’s skill as a songscraftsman is what elevates this album from fine to sublime.” 8/10 Oxford Music Blog

Saturday the 29th of September

Doors – 7:45 pm

On a course ‘beautifully their own’ (Amelia’s Gregory, Amelias’s Magazine)

Boat to Row are a collective of instrument swapping, harmony sharing friends from the Midlands; meandering through all that life and love have to offer. From its beginnings as a solo university project Boat to Row has evolved into a band confident with delivering intelligent, intricate folk.

BOAT TO ROW - http://youtu.be/OVKzAO6DcGw
Beginning with the 2010 tape only release Crossroads to the recent multi format Grassmarket EP Boat to Row have been playing a rigorous schedule of shows that have included sharing stages with Slow Club, Willy Mason and Johnny Flynn. Gaining a reputation for delivering an infectious, uplifting set Boat to Row will be taking this on tour with Dog is Dead and to many festivals this summer including 2000 Trees, Truck and Larmer Tree.

ANDY OLIVERI - http://soundcloud.com/andy-oliveri/marching-bands-and-marigolds
Growing up reading the lyrics and liner notes of dusty old records have left Andy Oliveri nothing but a storyteller. Echoing the spirit of Neil Young and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, he writes simple folk songs with his heart on his sleeve and words from a bared soul. Evident in the stripped back arrangements of tracks such as ‘My Fathers Son’ and ‘What I’m Told’, the fragility in his voice and guitar allow the songs to breathe, with no overblown arrangements to mask the sentiment.

After a successful run of shows to close 2011 and debut EP ‘Sing Mercy’ released through istartedthefire Records in April, Oliveri looks set to be a great force within UK folk in 2012.

EMILY C SMITH - http://soundcloud.com/emily-c-smith/fight-against-you-1
Emily’s music can be described as a cross between PJ Harvey and Debbie Harry with a bit of White Stripes, Patti Smith, Throwing Muses and Rockabilly thrown in.
Originally from Nuneaton, Emily moved to London 7 years ago having played bass and piano in bands back home. After the relocation she played gigs in South London at Andy Hankdog’s ‘Easycome’ nights, playing guitar, singing and writing songs as part of a duo ‘The Lorcas’. Supporting acts such as Heavenly Recording’s ‘Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou’ and Loose Record’s ‘Danny and the Champions of the World’. She has been solo since 2010 and has developed a style of song writing that is quite unique.

We’ve got a monster line up on the 6th of October. This time around we have the huge talent of Anna Lena & the Orchids headlining the night with great support from J Allen, Reuben Hollebon and Robin Grey.
Saturday the 6th of October

ANNA LENA & THE ORCHIDS

Anna Lena and the Orchids draws influences from Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, Bat for Lashes, Bjork and Ane Brun. Whilst similarities can be observed between The Orchids and the above acts, the bands mixture of Scandinavian folk, alternative rock and ambient musical styles, create a uniquely dark and beautiful sound

J ALLEN

Set in a town that perpetually runs at full speed, J. Allen’s ‘Wonder City’ builds slowly and focuses closely on single moments, enrapturing the listener with large scale washes of melody as it deconstructs a profound loneliness. His heartbreaking bedroom epics observe New York City from just outside of its whirlwind. His impressionistic arrangements use the city’s hums and whooshes as a soundscape upon which to layer songs of solitude and reflection, dreams and distraction.

J. Allen is the reclusive songwriter and founding member of Brooklyn’s spacey folk outfit Meanwhiles. In early 2010, finding himself currently unsigned, he began recording and arranging what would become his first ever solo release, ‘Wonder City’. The nine song LP is a true ‘solo’ record on which he writes, plays, and sings all of the parts himself.. except for the street noise and subway rumble. He captures those ‘on location’ with film production microphones and portable recording equipment. In an affecting combination of sound design and intimate performance each track blends together recordings from different sonic spaces, resulting in a cinematic landscape of a song. A verse might take place on a rainy street…a chorus in a quiet bedroom.

In his time with Meanwhiles, J. Allen and his brother Todd recorded 2 full length albums, 2 eps and travelled across the US and Europe, sharing stages with the likes of Martha Wainwright and Dean Wareham. Their debut album, ‘The Nights Rewind’ features Wainwright singing harmony vocal with Allen and was produced alongside Alan Weatherhead (Sparklehorse, Mary Timony). In late 2006 it was released by Decoder Records in Germany and the band began touring in earnest. Meanwhiles released their second LP, ‘Slow Motion Summer’ in 2009 on which Weatherhead again lent pedal steel and orchestral samples to the mix, as he had for ‘The Nights Rewind’. The London songwriter Nadine Khouri also made a guest appearance adding a haunting vocal to Allen’s ‘Dreams from the Underground’.

‘Wonder City’ will be officially released in Europe and the UK in early September to coincide with a European tour, a performance at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, and video releases for ‘Afterglow’, ‘Heavy Head’ and ‘Other Side of the Day’. American tour dates will follow in early 2013.

REUBEN HOLLEBONhttp://thegallerycafe.wordpress.com/
“Having recently self released his debut EP ‘Clutch’ and toured Europe playing shows from Slovakia to Stockholm, Reuben Hollebon is pushing his music to all corners. He performs a live show that is a stark, raw and intimate contrast to the layered sounds featured on his first record.”

ROBIN GREY

“Robin Grey has a lovely fresh approach to the folk genre. A honeyed yet clear voice and his lyrics are arresting. A real treasure.” The Londonist

“Robin Grey will not need to do too much to prove himself an incendiary artist in the world of folk music. There is literature in his words and his calmly exquisite mannerisms seem to bring you back to a simpler time and place.” Fensepost

Next stop at The Gallery Cafe and we are glad to welcome back some fine folk from Brighton in the form of House of Hats + Guests …
Friday the 12th of October
Doors – 7:45pm
£5 or £4 NUS/advance
House of Hats
This band deliver an honest and pure sound, often associated with the singer-songwriter/folk genre by their listeners. While there are elements of truth there, the reality is that their sound is one that is created naturally, and in turn, is incredibly unique. They have been compared to Fleetwood Mac and The Civil Wars, most likely because of the male and female figures sharing the lead, Nodd

y and Alex.Noddy and Alex’s distinctive, unique voices and songwriting styles are fused together with beautiful harmonies, reminiscent of those heard by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and minimal acoustic instrumentation, which does give their sound a ‘folk-like’ quality.

If House of Hats are to be put in the cauldron of emerging singer-songwriter/folk artists, they certainly bring something new and exciting to the folk scene that has not yet been heard.

All 4 members, Noddy Jimmy and brothers Alex & Rob Gigante, have been close friends for many years. They are all musicians/songwriters/performers and were all part of different projects in the same music circuit for a long time. Individually, prior to House of Hats, they’d all enjoyed successful stints in music, having recorded with Pete Smith (Sting, Squeeze), and supporting the likes of Sting & The Police, Paolo Nutini, The Script etc.

It wasn’t until a chance encounter at the beginning of 2011 that all 4 friends found themselves together in a room. Noddy sat at a piano and played a song, then Alex picked up a guitar and took his turn to play a song and, during these performances, Jimmy glued their rich voices together with a 3rd harmony. Rob set the foundation with his bass, stomping on the floor with his right foot and tapping a broken tambourine with his left.

It was clear from that day that they had stumbled across something quite special, and so it became, House of Hats. A name given to them by Jimmy’s observation that the group of friends they all knocked about with reminded him of the mad hatters tea party.

2011 saw them write, produce, record and release their debut, self-titled E.P. Write, produce and record a further 11 tracks in the studio. Perform several sell-out shows and build a humble and loyal fan-base in their home-town, Brighton and beyond.

House of Hats have a serious momentum about them and they are moving with intent.

GGGGRRRRREAT line up tonight at The Gallery Cafe (See Below)

Image

Due to family reasons the original headliners for this evening (All We Are) had to pull out. We have however been blessed with some stupendous replacements ..

Folklore Featuring … Kari K.Jahnsen/Douglas Dare + Guests
All We Are have been replaced with a split set from the equally wonderful Kari K. Jahnsen & Douglas Dare!! The Night also has top support from Maria Byrne & The Broken String and Lucy Kitt.

LIKE SPINNING

- Beautiful, lingering melodies coupled with melancholy lyrics reminiscent of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes with a definite eery undertone of eccentric ethereality
- ITNO Music

- Anglo-Norwegian band Like Spinning are purveyors of harmony rich indie-folk that will nestle nicely into you collection somewhere between First Aid Kit and Fleet Foxes (sound-wise, not alphabetically obviously). ‘My Window’ a dreamy track from recent double A-side single ‘Forces/My Window’, is a luscious, drifting and soothing treat for the ears and offers a few minutes of pure escapism
- The Sound Of Confusion

- Like Spinning are miners of melancholy. They’ve lured me into a world that is forever Autumn; a sunny sunny cold cold day full of fond memories and empty spaces. As they reach out I can’t help but give myself over, pulling a little closer as I don’t want to miss a thing. Hanging on every last word of such beautiful songs, songs with real weight to them as they offer intimacy and honesty in equal measures. Fans of many of today’s harmonious hot-shots (Fleet Foxes/Bon Iver et al) could find a new friend here, and perhaps one more worthy of your affection, a friend that you can actually relate to, imagine sitting with, sharing a joke, a drink, or a little encouragement to keep mining for that heart of gold
- Simple Folk Radio

- ‘Forces / My Window’ are both genuinely gorgeous, Kari has a truly beautiful voice, her ethereal vocals compliment the wistful melodies of her music perfectly, interweaving beautiful guitar arrangements with subdued percussion and dreamy harmonies to create a wonderful hazy, languid atmosphere that will ease your worries away
- Just Music That I Like

- Their sound is woozy dreamy alternative pop music with lots of female harmonies and floating guitar lines. Think Warpaint, Lanterns on the Lake and CocoRosie. The songs are exquisitely made and produced, I think they have the potential to make a really beautiful album
- Flying with Anna

- ‘Forces’ is an indie pop tune with a beautifully subtle composition. Jahnsen proves to be a skilled songwriter who conveys emotion well
- The DADADA

DOUGLAS DARE

Twenty-one year old Douglas Dare from West Dorset has emerged with a haunting sound of acoustic, piano based indie. Inspired by the solo projects of Jack Steadman (Bombay Bicycle Club), Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear) and Thom Yorke, Douglas combines intimate arrangements with a voice and lyric of a true storyteller.

Apparently, Maria Byrne used to work as a welder, tackling hairline cracks in Rolls Royce jet engines. Having never taken a naked flame anywhere near a jet engine, I can only imagine it to be an intensive, noisy way to pass the time. Which would make it pretty much the opposite of Byrnes debut album,Little Basement. For this record, youre going to need a different set of adjectives. How about sweet, simple and infectious. Those should tell you most of what you need to know.

Little Basement is full of sing-along melodies, at once delicate and full of life. Almost all of Byrnes momentum so far has been built through radio play, and its easy to see why given the charming tunes that make up this record, not least the toe-tappers Home and All You Need.

The celtic charm of her Irish upbringing shine through with the gentle fiddle adding a little fizzle, but the instrumentation is largely kept to a minimum in order to showcase Byrnes heart-warming vocals. The pace changes on the delightful Winter, which has an effect akin to a welcoming log fire on a cold day.

It helps to cap an accomplished debut that suggests Byrne has talent enough to keep her away from welding torches for as long as she chooses.

With an eclectic mix of folk rock and country blues, Lucy Kitt is fast developing a growing fan-base throughout the UK and beyond with her self-penned acoustic songs.
As a guitarist and performer in all girl Grunge band ‘Ostara’, the band quickly became established as well known musicians in their hometown of Romford & Upminster in Essex. It was moving to Kent for University after the split of Ostara that Lucy’s love for acoustic and folk took hold. Lucy naturally began taking inspiration from the likes of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Sandy Denny and music from her parents influential collection of 70s sounds. Beginning as a solo performer, Lucy soon became a feature on the Canterbury music scene and has been a respected local talent ever since. Recognition for her songwriting saw her reach the semi finals of the BBC Radio 2 young folk award in 2007. Beyond the UK, Lucy has fans across Europe and USA; having performed in Sweden and Switzerland, and organised her own mini-tour of North California, Lucy continues to spread her music far and wide. With radio air play in Australia as well as back home, and famous fans from the likes of anti-folk hero Billy Bragg, exposure of Lucys music is fast catching up her exceptional talent.
